Two questions come up before almost every booking: is there somewhere for the children to burn off energy, and is there somewhere the dog can run. The answer to both is a few minutes from your veranda, and every bit of it is marked on the walking map.

For the children

Somewhere to burn it off

The play park went in a few years ago and it is one of the things guests come back and mention. It sits on the green beside the alfresco dining area at the Command Post, so nobody has to choose between a coffee and keeping an eye on things.

Our maintenance crew built it themselves, out of timber picked to sit quietly in the woodland rather than shout over it. Climbing frames, a net, a shelter with a bench in it, and soft matting underneath.

There is a reading corner as well, which sounds like a small thing until you are sitting in it with ancient forest at your feet and a small person insisting on one more story.

Full-size football goals

A set of proper goals stands on the green, which turns any spare half hour into a match. Bring a ball with you — it is the one thing people forget.

Outdoor chess

A giant chess set laid out on the lawn. The game reached us from sixth-century India, where it was called chaturanga; this version simply involves more walking between moves.

Lawn games and the fairy trail

Hopscotch and French boules are set out on the park too, and there is a fairy trail through the trees — the right length for legs that have already done a long walk.

Pieces knee high, squares set into the lawn. A game takes longer than it should, mostly because of the walking.

For the dog

Off the lead, safely

Plenty of our guests bring a dog, and the park is set up for it. There is a fenced run with agility equipment in it, and somewhere to hose the mud off afterwards.

  • ✓The dog agility parkA fenced enclosure on the grass with weave poles, a ramp and a jump set out in it, plus a bench and a bin. The fence is the point: the lead comes off and stays off, which is useful after a long drive and better still before a long walk.
  • ✓The dog wash stationFor the state they come back in. A raised stainless tub with a hose, so you are not bending double or filling the lodge bath with half the forest. Six programmes on the panel: shampoo, rinse, a herbal shampoo for flea control, a conditioning rinse, a hi-lo blow dry, and a disinfect cycle to leave the tub clean for whoever is next. It is card operated on timed cycles, and you can top up part way through if you have underestimated the dog.

Before you set off

We do not run the activities

The play park, the goals, the games and the dog agility park are all free for guests to use, whenever you like. The dog wash is the one exception — it is card operated, on timed cycles from £10. We do not run organised activities ourselves — several independent providers are based on the park or will come to you, and you book those with them directly.

Where everything is

All of it sits within a few minutes of the lodges, around the green in front of The Command Post. The walking map shows the paths and where each one is — worth having on your phone before you set off.
