If you go down to the woods today…

When you visit Rockingham Forest Park, you will see that we are surrounded by lots of beautiful ancient woodlands. Why not embrace nature and do fun woodland-based activities?

I have put together a list of things you can try whilst you’re here visiting us.

Den building

Why not send the family out foraging sticks, leaves and other fallen materials? It is also important to know that you should not take things from living plants and just use materials that are natural and have already fallen, and not materials that would leave a trace. This can help you understand nature and also help your communication and problem-solving as a family, it is a great team-building exercise.

Wildlife Spotting

Why not bring some binoculars and/or a magnifying glass with you and become a nature detective? You can make note of all of the birds, minibeasts and plants you see.

Scavenger Hunt

This is a great way to explore nature and adds an exciting activity to a walk with your family. You can sit down together as a family and make a list of things you hope to see on your walk photograph them and tick them off. We often have a printout in reception for these types of activities, so why not pop in and pick one up 😊.

Have a Picnic

How about packing up a delicious lunch and a blanket and finding a lovely spot in the woods or by the lake and enjoying a nice picnic out in nature? As it is coming up to colder months, why not bring a thermos or tea or even soup to enjoy outside, whilst you take in the beautiful surroundings?

Make nature art

Using objects that you find on the ground; you could make lovely art pieces for yourselves and others to enjoy whilst they are out walking. Use twigs to make a sculpture, stick different colour leaves on paper to create something for your family to remember your trip or you could even place paper on a tree and rub a crayon over it to capture the natural art that the tree bark provides.

Play in the rain!

We know that rain can often cause us to cancel plans and put a bit of a dampen on things, but what if you just embraced it instead? Get your wellies on and your coat jump in puddles and see what bugs you can see whilst you explore the rain.

Hide and seek!

A classic for all ages! At one time in our lives, we enjoyed playing hide and seek, so why not play hide, and seek in the woods with your family?  Make sure you choose a safe location and create a safe word just in case anyone gets lost!

These are just a few examples of the fun things you can do here, amongst the woodland. If you go on one of the trails here, see if you can spot the hide that the Rockingham Forest Park team built together, why not snap a picture, and add it to Instagram and tag us? We would love to see you exploring! https://www.instagram.com/landal_rockinghamforestpark/

Don’t forget to pop into reception and see what fun activities we have printed out for you to take for free 😊

Happy exploring!
