Reflecting the development of human thought and creativity.

The origins of chess are shrouded in the mists of time, making it challenging to pinpoint an exact date or place of its inception.  However, most historians believe that chess originated in India during the Gupta Empire around the 6th Century CE known as “chaturanga”.

The game gradually spread to other regions through trade routes and conquests.  It was in Persia where it underwent significant changes in both name and form, calling it “shatranj.” The prices transformed into the recognisable forms of pawn, rook, knight, bishop, queen, and king.

In Europe, chess underwent further transformations, reflecting the cultural and societal changes of the Middle Ages.  The pieces gained new names and some of the pieces had their capabilities changed.  The most notable transformation was the evolution of the queen’s powers.  The queen would only move one square diagonal, but they the 15th century in Europe, the queen gained the power to move across the board diagonally and vertically.

The World Chess Championship was first held in 1886 and became the pinnacle of competitive chess. As long as humans value strategy, competition and intellectual challenge, the legacy of chess is sure to endure, inspiring generations to come.

Have a go and test your strategy.
